What is Hypnosis?

Over the years, it has become more accepted and widespread among mainstream medical communities to use hypnosis as a way to treat patients suffering from a wide variety of ailments from weight loss to depression. This naturally raises the question of whether or not it is really possible to treat serious problems with hypnosis. I certainly can understand why people have so many misconceptions about it. For so long, it has been associated with the dark arts and people performing it for show, it’s very easy not to take it seriously.

So What is Hypnosis?

The word “hypnosis” comes from a Greek word that means “to sleep.” However, rather than being asleep, the person is in a state known as ‘alpha’,  a very light trance state during which the person’s brain waves are vibrating in alpha frequency. This frequency is similar to the one we are in just before we drift off to sleep and while we are in this state we are 200 times more suggestable.

This means that the sub-conscious mind is a bit like an obedient servant, always willing to comply with what you suggest to it. It does this because it doesn’t know how to think or reason, it only knows how to respond to what it is told. For this reason, it can also respond to  subliminal messages or affirmations, which are positive statements that work to change your present negative mind-set into something positive.

The conscious mind, on the other hand, does not take suggestions very well because its main purpose is to think , reason and put into practise the things it already knows. It has a vested interest keeping everything the same and for this reason, tends to reject new suggestions as they try to enter the conscious mind.

When used properly, your subconscious mind can influence the way your conscious mind works. When you are able to access your sub-conscious mind directly, you are able to pump it full of positive and powerful messages. Your sub-conscious mind will accept them and inform the conscious mind that there is new information to be acted upon, eventually causing these things to become a reality.

How Does Hypnosis Help Me To Access My Sub-Conscious Mind?

Hypnosis works because it acts on the brains different frequency levels. The human brain operates on a variety of frequencies. When we are at work or carrying on a normal conversation with friends, our brain is one frequency, when are sleeping, it’s on another; when we are daydreaming or meditating, we are on another frequency and this is the frequency a hypnotist uses to directly contact our sub-conscious as when we are on this frequency, we are in a highly suggestable state.

For example, a person comes to a hypnotherapist with a desire to lose weight. This is a common request which is the result of people not being able to overcome the compulsion to eat. Where does this compulsion come from? The sub-conscious of course. Your sub-conscious has, over time, developed a ideal of your body shape and works all the time to try to get you to maintain it. If part of your weight goes, your sub-conscious will feel as though it has ‘lost’ something and seek to find ways to make you overeat and put all the weight back on. The is why most dieters experience the phenomenon of  ’yo-yo’ dieting.

The only way to overcome such a thing is to speak directly to the sub-conscious and get it to form a new ideal body shape, along with the suggestion of new eating and exercise habits.  Once this is done, it gives new information to the conscious mind to make better choices and then the real weight loss can occur.

Does Hypnosis Work?

Subliminal hypnosis and other kinds of hypnosis work but to a certain extent. There are different factors that can affect the healing process. For one, you need to be more open to the treatment. If your conscious mind isn’t ready for it, it will take a long time before you can get into your subconscious.

Can I Use Hypnosis on Myself?

The answer to this is ‘yes’.  In fact hyposis can be very effective when performed on yourself. In order to do this, there are two options; the first one is to do the recording yourself and if you have sound recording equipment (a very inexpensive microphone can do the trick), this can work great. You just need to record you messages so they can be played back later. The main advantage of this is that you can tailor-make your messages to suit yourself. However, If you want to save yourself some time and effort, you should consider purchasing some hypnosis tapes already prepared. Because of new technology which allow recordings to be downloaded effortlessly, there has been an explosion of quality self-hypnosis and brain entrainment products on the market which are being used by people wishing to find solutions to a myriad of issues with great results. The popularity of such products means that there is nearly always a hypnosis or subliminal recording to suit everybody and they have become a lot less expensive than they used to be. Linda,

    This is a terrific post!!!

My passion in life is learning about the subconscious mind. I have never really studied hypnosis, but it is interesting.

I watched Marshall Sylver at an internet marketing seminar last year and tried to be hypnotized, but couldn’t “go under” like the others. It was very fun to watch, though.

    Thanks for the great information!

    Karen

Great post, Linda! I haven’t used hypnosis for those purposes, but I’ve been hypnotized at a performance while I was in college on two separate occasions, and I can tell you that it is for real. I still remember how it was amazing the way that each hypnotist showed whether or not people are susceptible to hypnotism. (One had the audience close our eyes while imagining helium balloons tied to one hand and lead weights tied to the other, and the other had us imagine our fingers getting closer together until they touch.) I showed those to my wife, and it was funny because she saw it working in part, but she was resisting when she realized that it did. It really is amazing how much the mind can do, and how we really don’t know the full extent.

There’s no need to go under completely. As long as you are in a relaxed state you are suggestable. But yeah, I’m going for a session hopefully tomorrow with a friend so she can practise on me. Can’t wait to see what happens!

What a great web log. I spend hours on the net reading blogs, about tons of various subjects. I have to first of all give praise to whoever created your theme and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an fabulous article. I honestly believe there is a skill to writing articles that only very few posses and honestly you got it. The combining of demonstrative and upper-class content is by all odds super rare with the astronomic amount of blogs on the cyberspace.
